In 2006 the American Indian Library Association (AILA), an affiliate of the American Library Association (ALA), created a Youth Literature Award to identify and honor excellence in writing and illustrating by and about Native Americans for youth. Awards are given biennially in three categories: Best Picture Book, Best Middle School Book, and Best Young Adult Book. Winners receive $500, a plaque, and a custom-made beaded medallion seal. In the past two years, all but one of the six titles selected are available from the NLS collection.

A reception for this year's winners will be held on Monday, June 30, 2008, as part of ALA's annual conference activities.
AILA is cosponsoring with the Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS) Subcommittee on Library Services to American Indians three programs at the ALA annual conference, June 28 June 30, 2008, in Anaheim, California, as follows:
Saturday, June 28: Digitizing Indian Country. This program will survey and discuss digitization projects by tribal communities, archives, libraries, and museums of tribal materials.
Sunday, June 29: Coming to the Talking Circle: A Discussion. This meeting will discuss issues of current status and future considerations in library services to American Indians.
Monday, June 30: The Healthy Librarian: Cultivating Wellness in the Workplace. This interactive session will explore strategies to cultivate a healthy work environment.
