In September 2011, the Library of Congress celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps with this annotated bibliography of selected books in the Library of Congress collections authored by returned Peace Corps volunteers and a few former staff members. This revised and updated edition contains a listing of 247 books published between 1964 and 2012. Each entry links to a Library of Congress Online Catalog record, which contains more information about the book.
This edition focuses on works of fiction or nonfiction by about 200 authors or editors related to either “the Peace Corps experience” or the developing world in general. Although far from comprehensive, this selected bibliography is representative of the creativity, scholarship, and knowledge of the developing world of more than 1,000 Peace Corps writers. About 70 percent of the cited books are nonfiction and 30 percent, fiction. Less than a quarter of the books are memoirs of the Peace Corps experience. The authors served in the Peace Corps in more than 60 developing countries.
The Library of Congress collections include more than 775 books searchable by the “Peace Corps” keyword, but their authors did not necessarily serve in the Peace Corps. The Library’s collections also include many other books on subjects unrelated to the Peace Corps experience or the developing world by authors with Peace Corps service. This selected bibliography attempts to provide a representative sampling of the Library’s collection of books by authors with Peace Corps service.
