• Summary: Most photographs show locations in Palestine (present day Israel and the West Bank). Scenes in Jerusalem include the Dome of the Rock, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Jaffa Gate clock tower, the Garden of Gethsemane, the Mount of Olives, Tower of David, the Pool of Hezekiah, Solomon's Stables, the Wailing Wall, St. Stephen's Gate and Gordon's Calvary. Also shown are the Tomb of Lazarus in Bethany, the House of Simon the Tanner in Jaffa, the Tower of Ramleh, a procession in Bethlehem at Christmas, Jericho, the Jordan River, the Dan stream, the Wilderness of Judea, Endor, and Tiberias. Three photographs of Bethlehem copyrighted in 1924 show village house interiors with people and a camel caravan. Five photographs show British soldiers in the streets of Jerusalem. According to a handwritten note found with photographs these depict "bringing regimental flag of the Royal Fusiliers to Jerusalem" in 1918. One photograph shows a military review of British troops at the Russian Compound in Jerusalem. Images also depict Winston Churchill, T.E. Lawrence and Emir Abdullah of Transjordan near Government House in Jerusalem; American Colony photographer Lewis Larsson with "Jamil and Najib Albina" developing film at the American Colony; the Siloam inscription; the siq at Petra, Jordan; and the surrender of the mayor of Jerusalem to sergeants Hurcombe and Sedgewick. Included are portraits of Arab peasants, Jews, Franciscan and Armenian monks, the Armenian Patriarch in Jerusalem, women in Bethlehem, a family in Ramallah (Rām Allāh); Druze women; and Bedouins.

   • Yes, the item is digitized. Please use the digital image in preference to requesting the original. All images can be viewed at a large size when you are in any reading room at the Library of Congress. In some cases, only thumbnail (small) images are available when you are outside the Library of Congress because the item is rights restricted or has not been evaluated for rights restrictions.

     As a preservation measure, we generally do not serve an original item when a digital image is available. If you have a compelling reason to see the original, consult with a reference librarian. (Sometimes, the original is simply too fragile to serve. For example, glass and film photographic negatives are particularly subject to damage. They are also easier to see online where they are presented as positive images.)
