- "Meet the press," which began in 1945 as a joint venture of the Mutual Broadcasting System and American Mercury magazine, was the first public affairs program to feature a prominent guest interviewed by a panel of journalists. Lawrence E. Spivak and Martha Rountree originated the idea for "Meet the press" and co-produced the weekly show first on radio and then in a separate National Broadcasting Company (NBC) television edition starting in 1947. Separate shows were produced until 1950 when "Meet the press" moved permanently to television. In 1953, Martha Rountree left the show, and NBC bought "Meet the press." Lawrence Spivak remained on the show as a regular panelist, producer, and moderator until his retirement in 1975. Most "Meet the press" programs were broadcast from Washington, D.C.
