  • Significance: 829/831 Sixth Street is located in the City of Redlands, San Bernadino County, California. It was originally addresses at 31 Times Street. It occupies the middle of three lots at the southwest corner of Sun Avenue and Sixth Street. The other two lots remain vacant. The setback is 25 feet from Sixth Street from the east side. There is a garage on the rear to the west with a driveway along the north side of the house. This Queen Anne house is two stories in height and has been converted into two unites by the 1920's. Measuring approximately 30 feet wide on the east and west elevations by 60 feet deep on the north and south elevations, it is approximately 2100 square feet. It is of balloon wood frame construction. Character defining features on the exterior include a distinctive roof profile. It is a cross gable roof type. The front gable facing Sixth Street runs the full length of the facade, while the other three sides are smaller in size and do not run the full length. Each gable has a decorative barge board, with its lower end having a geometric design featuring a large center circle with smaller circles radiating around it. The east elevation's gable is more elaborate, with a series of vertical rectangular openings with arched tops matching the roof's slope. Another significant feature is a front porch, which runs the full length of the entrance facade. It includes columns with a chamfered edge and decorative brackets with a circle cut-out. Other features include a bay window with classical paneling on the north elevation, white shiplap siding throughout, and square and fish shingles on the upper portion of the entrance, north and south gables. Additionally, there is s frieze with a row of half-spheres on the entrance gable side. Currently, the house plan features two units. The lower unit is entered from the door on the right located on the front porch. It opens up into a small foyer. Directly to the right is a living room, which is attached to a dining room with a wide arch. A prominent bay window, a built-in cabinet, and wraparound dish rail distinguish the dining room. Beyond the dining room to the rear is the kitchen, and there is a bedroom and bathroom just south of the dining room. Additions include a wash room and pantry accessed from the north side of the kitchen, a sun room located just east of the bedroom where a wraparound porch used to be, and a laundry room at the rear just beyond the kitchen, accessed from the back yard. The upper unit is entered from the door on the left from the front porch. A staircase leads you up into a living room on the right. Adjacent to the living room are two bedrooms and a kitchen, which feature sloped ceilings. A small bathroom connects to this kitchen. Additionally, there is a balcony directly south of the kitchen, with an outdoor staircase leading down to the backyard.

You can download online images yourself. Alternatively, you can purchase copies of various types through Library of Congress Duplication Services.

• Make note of the Survey Number (e.g., HAER NY - 143) and Sheet Number (e.g., "Sheet 1 of 4"), which appear on the edge of the drawing. (NOTE: These numbers are visible in the Tiff "Reference Image" display.)
• If possible, include a printout of the drawing.

In the rare case that a digital image for HABS/HAER/HALS documentation is not displaying online, select images for reproduction through one of these methods:

• Visit the Prints & Photographs Reading Room and request to view the group (general information about service in the reading room is available at: http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/info/001_ref.html). It is best to contact reference staff in advance (see: http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/address.html) to make sure the material is on site. OR
• P&P reading room staff can provide up to 15 quick copies of items per calendar year (many original items in the holdings are too old or fragile to make such copies, but generally HABS/HAER/HALS materials are in good enough condition to be placed on photocopy machines). • Hire a freelance researcher to do further selection for you (a list of researchers in available at: http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/resource/013_pic.html).

All images can be viewed at a large size when you are in any reading room at the Library of Congress.      As a preservation measure, we generally do not serve an original item when a digital image is available. If you have a compelling reason to see the original, consult with a reference librarian. (Sometimes, the original is simply too fragile to serve. For example, glass and film photographic negatives are particularly subject to damage. They are also easier to see online where they are presented as positive images.)
