Editorial cartoon shows five menacing looking vultures (labeled "The New Right") huddled together on a branch. The cartoonist's small penguin, Punk, says, "Mr. Reagan was hoping for a nice parakeet ..." The cartoon draws it's inspiration from Thomas Nast's drawing of Boss Tweed and his Tammany Hall ring as vultures. The New Right was the term used to describe the conservative wing of the Republican Party that traced its roots to the Barry Goldwater presidential campaign in 1964. By 1980, it's strength had grown to the point that it was instrumental in the election of Ronald Reagan. In 1982, however, at a conference of New Right organizations held in Washington, there was considerable criticism that Reagan had not lived up to his promises. |
