Cartoon shows rocks (labeled "U.S. Ultimatum to Yugoslavia") hurtling down a mountain side toward a building (labeled "UN") still under construction. In August 1946, Yugoslavia shot down two American planes, and took the survivors prisoner. On August 21, the United States threatened to take the matter to the UN Security Council if Yugoslavia did not release the prisoners in the next 48 hours. This episode was one of the early indications of the existence of a Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union and its allies. Pease questions whether the newly established United Nations is strong enough to handle the situation. In fact, the immediate crisis was averted when Yugoslavia released the prisoners the next day. |
