Editorial cartoon shows Uncle Sam and Democratic presidential nominee John F. Kennedy standing behind a jalopy (labeled "U.S.A.") mired in mud with broken headlights and damaged by rocks and boards spiked with nails. The last few years of President Eisenhower's administration had seen a number of diplomatic disasters. Vice President Nixon had been attacked by mobs in Latin America, an American spy plane had been shot down over the Soviet Union, Soviet leader Khrushchev had boycotted a long-planned summit, and reports charged that the United States lagged far behind the Soviet Union in the production of missiles. Herblock suggests that the nomination of the inspiring young Senator Kennedy by the Democrats on July 13 may be the solution to the country's needs. |
