Free-trade Democrats and progressives in both major political parties favored lowering protective tariffs which appeared to contribute to higher prices for the consumer while producing extra large profits for some U.S. manufacturers. The major issue of the 1908 presidential campaign, Pughe's cartoon appears to imply that the protective tariffs in fact, protect the trusts. |
