The Gladstone Collection features photographs of African Americans and related military and social history. The Civil War era is the primary time period, with scattered examples depicting African Americans in the military through 1945. The collection has about 200 cartes de visite (LOT 14022). Subjects of special note in these include two images of Sojourner Truth, former slave children from New Orleans (photographed to raise money), African American civilians, civil war military installations and officers, some plantation views. An album (LOT 14023) has carte de visite portraits of officers from the 25th United States Colored Troops. Another group (LOT 14024) has images, by photographer Henry Moore, showing South Carolina during the civil war, including plantations and freed slaves on Edisto and Hilton Head Islands; also Buffalo soldiers and servicemen from World War I and World War II. The collection also has over 20 ambrotype and tintype portraits of African American soldiers and civilians (AMB/TIN filing series). Related ephemera include patriotic envelopes, a sheet music cover, a military service certificate, and a military badge (LOT 14024). |
