- Summary: Photographs show Armenian families, towns, and social and religious activities in primarily in the Kharpert (Harput) region of the Ottoman Empire (now Turkey) from the late 19th and to early 20th centuries. Most of the collection is portraits of Armenians and others including Greeks and Assyrians, in Worcester, Massachusetts. Images of Armenian church, club and community activities in the Worcester area are also included.

- Photographer Kazar Sarkis Melikian (1885-1969) opened the K.S. Melikian Studio at 421 Main St., Worcester, Massachusetts in 1920. Following Melikian's death, his daughter Mary Melikian (1926-2015) continued the work of the studio until 2011.
- Collection includes glass and film negatives, photographs, copy photographs, postcards and some drawings and other original artwork.
- Rolled panoramic photographs not available for service until conservation work done.
- Most of the textual material including books and periodicals were transferred to the African and Middle Eastern Division.

All images can be viewed at a large size when you are in any reading room at the Library of Congress. In some cases, only thumbnail (small) images are available when you are outside the Library of Congress because the item is rights restricted or has not been evaluated for rights restrictions.
As a preservation measure, we generally do not serve an original item when a digital image is available. If you have a compelling reason to see the original, consult with a reference librarian. (Sometimes, the original is simply too fragile to serve. For example, glass and film photographic negatives are particularly subject to damage. They are also easier to see online where they are presented as positive images.)
