World War II cartoon shows a man labeled "Japan," driving a car labeled "Indo-China Grab," through a large mud puddle labeled "Pacific" and splashing Uncle Sam who is trying to cross another large puddle labeled "Atlantic" on stepping stones. In the summer of 1941, American foreign policy was directed toward trying to curb Japanese expansion in the Pacific and provide needed military supplies for Great Britain in the Atlantic -- and at the same time, avoid being drawn into the war. On July 24, 1941, Japan provided new provocation when its troops landed in southern Indochina in a move to gain control of raw materials there. |
