World War II cartoon shows CIO President Philip Murray asking President Roosevest what he should do about a paper reading, "United Mine Workers. The CIO owes us $1,665,000. How about Something on Account? John L. Lewis." Roosevelt responds, "Well, Phil, if I know John, he's not going to forget about it." In 1942, Lewis had a falling out with Murray, his handpicked successor at the CIO. One reason was Murray's willingness to cooperate with Roosevelt, Lewis's archenemy. In March, Lewis's United Mine Workers union refused to pay its monthly dues to the CIO, claiming the dues should be deducted from a debt owed the UMW. The CIO rejected the claim, and before the year was over, the UMW had withdrawn from the CIO. Berryman suggests that Roosevelt, who had long experience in dealing with vengeful UMW leader, would have been reasonably sure that the matter would not be settled amicably. |
