Cartoon shows Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover, the Republican nominee for president in 1928, seated on a platform wearing a large ribbon reading "Nomination." The GOP elephant (wearing a large Hoover button) walks away happily, holding a paper reading "Hoover Acceptance." The caption probably refers to the fact that Al Smith, the Democratic candidate, had repudiated his party's plank supporting Prohibition. Hoover's acceptance speech in August 1928, generally endorsed the Republican platform and, at the time, made little news. Some years later, after the stock market crash in 1929 and the onset of the Great Depression, the speech acquired a measure of fame as the occasion in which Hoover asserted "We in America today are nearer to the final triumph over poverty than ever before in the history of any land." |
