ABOUT THE LECTURE:

Professor Cheradame will discuss his current research on the use of aminoalkylalkoxysilanes in paper conservation. Several experiments will be described, leading to discussion of the role of the structure of the molecule responsible for the deacidification effect and the improvement of mechanical properties, as well as the role of residual moisture and the role of the solvent in paper deacidification. Potential implications for the use of aminoalkyalkoxysilanes for a mass-scale deacidification process will be discussed.

Professor Hervé Cheradame, Emeritus Professor of the University of Evry and Vice-President of the Centre de Conservation du Livre in Arles, France, has published over 180 scientific papers, primarily in the area of polymer synthesis and properties.

After completing his PhD at the Sorbonne in 1966, Dr. Cheradame became Assistant Professor in 1969 at the University of Paris, then Professor at Grenoble University in 1972. In 1992 he joined the newly-founded University of Evry to create a laboratory for polymeric materials and interfaces. The activity of this laboratory is devoted to the synthesis of model polymers and the physical chemistry of biological membranes.
