Reconciliation Processes in Africa: International Organization Initiatives

This collection of Internet sites provides access to the web sites of selected multilateral and bilateral organizations, international foundations, research institutes or university-based programs providing legal and policy analysis, documentation, and research on reconciliation initiatives and attempts to promote reconciliation in the Africa region. Although selective, inclusion of a site by no means constitutes endorsement by the African and Middle Eastern Division of the Library of Congress. Every source listed here was successfully tested before being added to the list. Users, however, should be aware that a successful connection may sometimes require several attempts.

The Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) is a unique international organization offering a wide range of dispute resolution mechanisms. This site has searchable features generally dealing with the procedures of conflict resolution and specifically the cases of each problem area of the globe. The full document of agreement between the governments of the Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the government of the State of Eritrea can be obtained. The arbitration cases of the Boundary Commission and the Claims Commission for the two countries are covered.

In fact, it contributed to the rebuilding of confidence amongst the 4.1 million internally displaced persons (IDP’s), 3 [million] at that time living in camps or scattered around urban areas throughout the country, and 450,000 refugees living in the neighbouring countries of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia and Namibia. The millions of displaced Angolans represent important political and economic elements in the development and implementation by the government of reconstruction and regeneration policies throughout the country.

The Training for Peace (TfP) in Southern Africa program, an international training and research program funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Corporation, contributes towards capacity building within the broader ambit of peace operations at the practical and conceptual level in the Southern African Development Community. The Security Council Committee of the United Nations has important selected documents, annual reports and resolutions concerning the Ethio- Eritrean conflict. These provide basic information regarding the measures taken by the UN. The UN Security Council played important roles from deciding on arms embargo to events leading up to the signing of the Cessation of Hostilities document in Algiers to appealing to the two governments to achieve peaceful resolution of the conflict.
