AFRICANA SUBJECT FUNNEL REPORT

ALC CATALOGING COMMITTEE

Fall 2003

A total of 16 new and 16 revised subject authorities have been submitted to the Library of Congress since the last update (Spring 2003). Initial drafts were submitted to the funnel by Lauer, Janet Stanley (Smithsonsian) and Shoshana Seidman (Northwestern). Some revisions involved changes in the heading.

In addition to the above, another 20 Africana headings were submitted by other non-LC libraries since last report. And the coordinator submitted a minor change for Nkundu (African people) without vetting via the funnel. The Appendix lists these other new headings which were approved Jan.-Sept. 2003.

Several of the revisions submitted just before the Spring meeting have since been rejected or modified. For example, Dzing (the name preferred by Biebuyck’s and scholars for a Ghanaian people) was replaced with Ding (Ethnololgue’s version). A mechanism to report these changes to interested parties needs to be developed.

The time for LC processing fell from two months in the Spring to about 4 weeks in October. A bigger delay continues to be researching and processing by the coordinator. Since April 2003, I have added 28 headings to my file of proposed or revised headings. There are dozens of others added earlier that still merit work.

Joseph J. Lauer – Oct. 28, 2003; rev. 1/30/04
