Upcoming Library of Congress Events:May 23, 2001 (12:00-1:00 p.m., AMED Conference Room, Jefferson Building, Room 220) Dr. Marilyn Sephocle will read from and sign her book Then, They Were Twelve: The Women of Washington's Embassy Row. This presentation is being co-sponsored by the African Section with the Hispanic Division. Then, They Were Twelve is a historical account of the Washington diplomatic scene of the late 1990s, when the number of women ambassadors reached the double digits for the first time. The newspaper Diplomat notes that the book "stimulates plenty of thinking about the future of diplomacy in which women will play an increasingly prominent role." Dr. Sephocle is Associate Professor of German at Howard University and is also the author of Die Rezeption der Negritude in Deutschland. She has previously worked at the United Nations. Upcoming Outside Events:May 24-26, 2001 The Sudan Studies Association is pleased to announce that its 2001 conference will be held at Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan. This year's theme is: "The 20th Anniversary of the Sudan Studies Association. The Sudan and its Community of Scholars." For more information, click here. May 27-30, 2001 June 18-August 9, 2001 Summer Cooperative African Language Institute (SCALI) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison will support the instruction of a number of African languages as well as provide a program of cultural activities. For more information,click here. August 3-11, 2001 Zimbabwe International Book Fair, Harare Zimbabwe. The theme is "Transformation."
