American Community Survey   (Annual)
http://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/acs/

Begun in 1996, the American Community Survey (ACS) is an annual survey that provides economic, demographic, social and housing information on every county in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. It provides the same data for communities on a yearly basis that is comparable to what the decennial census does every ten years. It was designed to provide access to more current data from the decennial census via the Census Long Form Questionnaire with the goal of eventually replacing the Long Form. Census 2000 Long Form [PDF format: 501.15 KB/40 pp.] was the last one to be used. Census 2010 used one of the shortest forms in history. For additional information on the U.S. Census Bureau's Questionnaires, go to http://www.census.gov/dmd/www/2000quest.html .

Additional information on the ACS is available from the following print publications:

Current Population Survey (CPS)   (Monthly)
http://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/cps.html

The Current Population Survey is a monthly survey of approximately 50,000 households conducted by the Census Bureau for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It is the primary source for information on labor force characteristics of the U.S. population. It produces monthly statistics on unemployment and the labor force which are published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in its monthly bulletin, Employment and Earnings, which is now web-only. For earlier print editions, see the Library of Congress catalog record. Current information on the CPS and the reports generated from it are available on the Census Bureau's CPS page and Labor Force Statistics page on the BLS site.

Current Population Statistics

This is a series of survey data products providing updated information to the Decennial Census of Population and Housing and cover various topics such as population size and characteristics, population projections, income, labor, households and more. Following is a list of the major survey titles/programs series and information on the subjects they cover and how to access them.

Current Population Reports   Annual
http://www.census.gov/main/www/cprs.html

The Current Population Reports are derived from the Current Population Survey (mentioned above). These annual reports contain data on geographic residence and mobility, school enrollment, marital status and living arrangements, information on the Black population and persons of Hispanic origin, and various other topics. Some are available as printed reports, others are available on the Internet and on CD-ROM. Information on earlier reports are available on pages 152-168 in the 1996 Census Catalog and Guide [PDF format: 83.6 MB/326 pp.]. This guide may also be accessed from the U.S. Census Bureau's list of the volumes of Census Catalog and Guide available online.

The Current Population Reports for selected series are:
  • P- 20: Population Characteristics
Annual reports covering geographic residence and mobility, school enrollment, marital status, living arrangement, households and families, the Black population, persons of Hispanic origin, and various other topics.
  • P- 23: Special Studies
Information pertaining to methods, concepts, or specialized data, occasional reports on family life, women, voter turnout, computer use, and other topics.
  • P- 60: Consumer Income Reports
Information on families, individuals, households at various income levels. Data presented on non cash benefits and relation of income to age, sex, race, family size, education, occupation, work experience, and other characteristics.

Population Estimates and Projections   (Monthly)

Population Estimates and U.S. Population Projections are monthly estimates of U.S. population; annual mid-year estimates of U.S. population by age, sex, race, Hispanic origin; states by age and sex; plus population totals for counties, metropolitan areas, and 36,000 cities and local governments. The following series of reports contain population estimates and projections:
Index Note: Additional information about these series can be found in the Subject Index To Current Population Reports and Other Population Report Series, available in the collections of the Library of Congress (Call Number: HA203.A218 #192 August 1996) and online at http://www.census.gov/prod/2/pop/p23/p23-192.pdf [PDF Format: 255 KB/ 57 pp.]

Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP)
http://www.census.gov/sipp/

The Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) is a longitudinal national survey conducted by the Census Bureau. Its major purpose is to provide estimates of the economic situation of families and individuals. Questions deal with employment, types of income, participation in government programs, and non cash benefits. Other questions may include school enrollment, marital history, migration, child care, disability, and other topics.

Data from SIPP are available in the following series:

Other Population and Related Reports

Statistical Briefs (SB's)

The Census Bureau released the first statistical brief in 1986. These two to four page, concise, easy to read format reports contain data from various printed census reports. They are now being released electronically and are increasingly being produced based on unpublished data. In 1996, statistical briefs were redesigned and reissued as Census Briefs. A list of Statistical Briefs can be found on the Census Publications General and Reference web page under the Census Briefs link. [Note that as of this writing, some of the links to individual briefs listed are not working.] Some additional Statistical Briefs related to the Survey of Income and Program Participation are available here and 2010 Census Briefs can be found on the 2010 Census website.

Population Paper Listings (PPL's)

Population Paper Listings began in 1994 to help ensure and provide a structure for timely data release. They contain primarily photocopies of data tables from printed reports whose sources of data are the CPS, SIPP, and Population Estimates and Projections. The 1996 Census Catalog and Guide [PDF format: 83 MB/ 326 pp.], has a list of these paper listings on pages 159-160. For more recent information, call the Population Division at the Census Bureau (301-763-2422) for more information. Data included in the Population Paper Listings are frequently available as files on the Internet in whole or in part.

1990 Census of Population and Housing Paper Listings (CPH-L's)
http://www.census.gov/population/www/cph-l.html

The 1990 Census of Population and Housing Paper Listings were created to supplement the data found in the 1990 Census of Population and Housing tabulation and publication program. They cover a wide range of topics including race, ancestry, nursing home population, educational attainment and more.

Housing Subject Reports

These reports are produced from the subject summary tape files (STF's) and cover topics such as mobile homes, recent mover households, housing of the elderly, condominium housing, and characteristics of new housing units. Some of these are available as statistical briefs, printed reports, on CD-ROM, and online from the Census Bureau's web site. See the Census Bureau's Housing Topics for guidance in accessing these reports. To determine LC holdings of items in this series, search the Library's online catalog, doing a title search for "current housing reports."

Current Housing Statistics

Just as there are current population statistics which update decennial population data, so are there survey data products which provide updated information to the decennial housing data. These products cover information on the Nation's housing including apartments, housing and household characteristics, home ownership, housing of various racial and ethnic populations, housing trends, and neighborhood quality. Following is a list of the major housing surveys, the topics they cover, and appropriate URL's.

The American Housing Survey (AHS) collects data annually on the Nation's housing including apartments, single-family homes, mobile homes, vacant housing units, household characteristics, income, housing, neighborhood quality, housing costs, equipment and fuels, size of housing unit, and recent movers. National data and data for each of 46 selected Metropolitan Areas are collected. The national sample includes on average 55,000 homes and the survey is conducted by the Census Bureau for the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The AHS returns to the same housing units year after year and therefore is conducive for analyzing the flow of households through housing.

For additional information on housing reports, go to http://www.census.gov/housing/. Other housing information is available from the HUD User web site at http://www.huduser.org/portal/. For additional information on AHS, see:
