This three-volume encyclopedia covers the development of the tariff and its relationship to
trade in U.S. history from 1600s to 2003. Volume 1, The encyclopedia. Volume 2, Debates of the
issues. Includes a number of selected primary documents such as the General Agreement of
Tariffs and Trade amended through 1966 and the Gore-Perot debate over the ratification of the
North American Free Trade Agreement. Volume 3 holds the texts of the tariffs passed by the
U.S. Congress 1789-1930. It ends with tariff acts in 1930 when Congress allowed the executive
branch to negotiate reciprocal trade agreements. This reference work includes a subject index
and an extensive bibliography. A list of tariff acts by easily identifiable titles and dates is
offered which is very helpful since after 1860 most tariffs became more widely known by the
names of the congressmen who sponsored them.
