Fashion retailing is no longer just about bricks and mortar stores. Catalogs have long been a staple of selling clothing. Then came TV channels like QVC, HSN, and Evine with their own lines as well as better known brands sold in department stores. The 21st century has seen the Internet as playing an increasingly bigger, even dominant role in selling clothing, bags, shoes, and other accessories to consumers. Internet retailing has led to highly specialized sites as well as expanded opportunities. Obviously, bricks and mortar stores and shopping channels have individual web sites where they sell clothing that is sold in stores or featured on a show, but increasingly they also sell items that were never sold in stores or featured on shows. There are also an increasing number of web only brands. Sites like NastyGal which began life selling vintage clothing and rental sources like Rent the Runway proliferate online. This has been a boon for the types of customers that may have been ignored. For example, those who need plus size fashions and other nontraditional sizes had limited options when retail operations and what was sold was controlled by those who had specific ideas. The Internet has meant businesses have options in terms of selling when start-up costs and other considerations have shifted. Internet sites like ModCloth, StichFix, Gwynnie Bee, Avenue, and others have been able to expand their selections beyond just the traditional sizes. They are able to stock more sizes and reach more customers in ways that werenít as possible with physical stores.

Keeping up with the fast pace of change is an ongoing process in the "here today, gone tomorrow" fashion industry. Using traditional trade literature and web portals as well as reports from research groups is essential as a way to find the more general articles and reports but may be even more important to find reports and articles that look at a particular segment, niche market, situation, or trend.
