Tax Information on Charities and Nonprofits (IRS)
The IRS provides lots of information on taxation and registration of charities and nonprofits. Business researchers need to know that tax forms of Nonprofit Organizations are available to the public. Nonprofits are required to submit their financial statements and other information -- including the salaries of directors, officers, and key employees -- to the IRS.
The IRS and nonprofits themselves are required to disclose the information on Form 990 to anyone who asks. However, many nonprofit websites make Forms 990 available for the searching, including the Foundation Center and at GuideStar.
This organization has provided studies on nonprofit news sector, e.g. Finding a Foothold: How Nonprofit News Ventures Seek Sustainability which offers a look at nonprofit news organizations and methods between 2010 and 2012.
