Constraints on the Waging of War
An Introduction to International Humanitarian Law
by Frits Kalshoven and Liesbeth Zegveld
Geneva, International Committee of the Red Cross
March 2001 (English); April 2005 (Spanish) |
First
published in English in 1987 and 1991, this third, expanded edition
provides basic information about the origin, character, content
and current problems of the body of law known traditionally as
the law of war and, more recently, as “international humanitarian
law applicable in armed conflict” or “humanitarian
law.” According to Professor Kalshoven, an expanded
edition of this volume was
necessitated by two factors: the numerous and far-reaching developments
in the field of international humanitarian law in the late 20th
century, and the expansion of the scope of international humanitarian
law incorporating human rights law and international criminal
law.
