The Hon. Charles H. Elston (chairman) presided over the subcommittee hearings in April 1947. The full text of the hearings, contained in volume 1, include the statements of Hon. Kenneth C. Royall, Under Secretary of War; Maj. Gen. Thomas H. Green, Judge Advocate General of the Army; Omar B. Ketchum, Legislative Director, Veterans of Foreign Wars; Hon. Donald E. Long, Circuit Judge and Chairman of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Special Committee on Military Service; George A. Spiegelberg, Chairman, Committee on Military Justice of the New York County Lawyers Association; Frank M. Ludwick, Supreme Justice of the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity; Arthur E. Farmer, Chairman of the Committee on Military Law, War Veterans Bar Association; Col. Ralph G. Boyd, President of Judge Advocates Association; Brig, Gen. Hubert D. Hoover, Assistant Judge Advocate General of the Army; Harry V. Hayden, Jr., National Legislative Representative of the American Legion; Col. Pinckney G. McElwee, Judge Advocate General’s Department Reserve; William A. Roberts, Chairman of the Policy Committee of AMVETS, Lt. Gen. J. Lawton Collins, U.S. Army; and Justin N. Feldman, National Director of Veterans’ Affairs of the American Veterans Committee.

     The full committee hearings, Hon. Walter G. Andrews presiding, are contained in volume 2. The first hearing, designated as Committee Serial No.177, was held on July 8, 1947 and includes the report by Mr. Elston, Chairman, Subcommittee No. 11, Legal. The second hearing, designated as Committee Serial No.185, was held on July 15, 1947 and includes statements by Robert P. Patterson, Secretary of War, and General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Chief of Staff, U.S. Army. (Library of Congress Call Number KF26.8.A7 H43; and OCLC Number 276306094).
