127. A Plan of English Harbour With the Kings Yard and Carooning Wharfe [Antigua]. Martel, P[e ]t[e]r. 1745. Colored pen-and-ink ms., 52 x 36 cm. Scale ca. 1:3,000. (Howe; 52). 73-691522.
This is a beautiful, colorful and well-executed British
map of English Harbour, Antigua, a principal port facility for British
activities in the Caribbean. Map includes coastline, coastal features,
extensive soundings, a navigational hazard, fortifications, shipyards,
detailed pictorial representation of cultivated fields, vegetation,
and an ornate wind rose. Map also includes a keyed legend. Map clearly
demonstrates the primary purpose of the port to serve as a naval depot
and dry dock. This map is one of a group of 72 maps and charts from
the Howe Collection related to the Luso-Hispanic World. That collection
includes numerous manuscript maps of the West Indies, the North and
South American coastlines, and of the Philippines. The collection was
acquired in 1905 from descendants of Admiral Lord Richard Howe (1726-1799)
who served as commander in chief of the British fleet in North America
during the first two years of the U.S. Revolutionary War.

This clear and beautifully executed Spanish plan of Oran and vicinity includes a detailed grid of the city, roads, streams, a proposed hospital, and pictorial representation of vegetation and cultivated fields. Title and inscription are within a border of native trees, and below note is a perspective view of Oran from the north. Purpose of map is to serve as an official plan of the city showing streets, blocks, and plots with dimensions and to serve as real estate promotion. As extensive note in cartouche makes clear, the city already had 809 residents. Map is dedicated to the "Rey Nuestro Señor Don Carlos IIII" (Carlos IV). Map is oriented with east at top. The city was possibly founded and settled to serve as an outpost for the Spanish in an area that was sparsely settled and that was both relatively close to the Spanish-Portuguese boundary in the late 18th century and to Potosí and the silver mines to the north. Map is closely related to "Plan topografico del Valle de Centa..." under call number G5354 .S61 1794 .G3 Vault.
