This clear precise map of the Gulf of Panama includes coastline, coastal features, soundings, navigational hazards, characteristics of the water bottom, and settlements. Chart was prepared by cartographers aboard the corvettes, Descubierta and Atrevida of the Malaspina Expedition of 1793. This map is part of the G&M Division's collection from the Real Escuela de Navegación, Cadiz, Spain purchased from Maggs Brothers, London.

This map of the route of the Panama Canal proposed by the first French canal company "Compagnie Universelle du Canal Interocéanique de Panama" includes the proposed right of way, the railroad route, roads, streams and other bodies of water, towns and settlements, and pictorial representation of vegetation and relief. Map includes a keyed legend. A note in English states "This map represents the Sea Level Project for the Panama Canal as adopted by the 'Congres Internationale d'Etudes de Canal Interoceanique' which was convened in Paris in the year 1879. The estimated cost was $214,000,000 and estimated time required to construct was 12 years. Work was carried on by the French Company, in accordance with this map until 1885. Donated by Mrs. Amelie Booz of Cristobal, Canal Zone, November, 1926, who found the map among the effects of her father Monsieur Louis Charles Brochard. The map was made by M. Map includes two keyed legends, one to sites in the canton of Bocas del Toro and the other to populated places. Extensive notes framing the map inform of coastal features, distances between settlements, and sociological characteristics of both coasts. This map is especially useful for information about the areas of Bluefield (Nicaragua) and the Mosquito Coast. This map was copied from the original 1620 map in the Archivo General de Indias, Seville, Spain described in item 38 in Torres Lanzas' Relación...de Panamá. This map was transferred to the Library of Congress from the collections of the Panama Canal Zone Library-Museum.
