Collections: The Huntington Library does not collect copies from any other archive, but it has some acquired records by donation early in this century, all of them in the form of photographic copies. The concern of the collection was subject matter rather than archival provenance, but it does have three significant groups of material copied from Spanish archives:

Archives of the Indies Collection (approximately 250 pieces). Selected manuscripts on the exploration and settlement of California, the establishment and administration of the missions, etc. Included are the journals of Sebastián Vizcaíno, Miguel Constansó, Juan Crespi, Francisco Palau, and Juan Bautista de Anza, 1597-1776.

Dispatches of the Governor of Louisiana to the Captain General of Cuba.(1)

Karpinski Collection. Manuscript maps relating to the history of America before 1800 from the Archivo General de Indias, Biblioteca Nacional (Madrid), Ministry of War, Ministry of Marine, Palacio Liria (the Duque de Alba's residence in Madrid), and the Biblioteca del Palacio Real, Madrid.(2)

In addition, there are scattered copies of documents that will be listed after the contents of the three aforementioned collections.

Archives of the Indies Collection

The reproductions consist of negative photographic prints from documents listed in Charles E. Chapman's Catalogue of Materials in the Archivo General de Indias for the History of the Pacific Coast and the American Southwest (Berkeley: University of California, 1919). The principal idea behind Chapman's choice of legajos was "the likelihood of their containing materials for California history" (p. 31). Chapman's Catalogue was made with the pre-1929 AGI classification.(3) This entry will follow the same order as Chapman"s Calendar of Items.(4)

Notes

1. One of ten sets of prints distributed in 1916 by the Carnegie Institution of Washington D.C. See entries for the Library of Congress and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

2. Other copies of the Karpinski Collection are held by the Library of Congress (see entry), the William Clemens Library, the New York Public Library and the Ayers Collection at the Newberry Library in Chicago.

3. According to Chapman's Catalogue, the entire Estado section is composed of 105 legajos dating from 1750 to 1836 and are of the same sort as those in the Audiencia group of the Gobierno section; i.e., the Estado section is divided into the same thirteen colonial Audiencias as Gobierno, plus one other called América en General (p. 33).

4. See Calendar of Items beginning in Chapman's Catalogue, pp. 70-726.

5. Sebastian Vizcaíno may appear as Bizcaino, Vizcayno, etc.

6. The items selected here do not repeat those listed in the Library of Congress' Karpinski Collection. See entry for the Library of Congress in this Guide.

7. Frequently, one hears and reads in the United States that the peninsula of Baja California is addressed as "Baja"; this is a historical and grammatical error. "Baja" is not a name, it simply means "lower". The original (1535) name of the peninsula is "California".
