Professor of History, University of Nevada, Las Vegas
THE EROSION OF IMPUNITY IN CHILE AND ARGENTINA
Prof. Wright examines the changing domestic and international conditions that ended the impunity enjoyed by former repressors during the 1990s and resulted, in recent years, in the trials and convictions of hundreds of military men for human right violations carried out under state terrorist regimes: the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile (1973-1900) and the "dirty war" in Argentina (1976-1983). Chile and Argentina are the only Latin American countries to systematically bring human rights violators to justice in their own courts---a phenomenon that is virtually unprecedented in modern world history.
