"AHRI was founded 1969 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia.... AHRI was erected next to a large hospital (ALERT –All Africa Leprosy Rehabilitation and Training Center) for leprosy patients with both in-patient and a large out-patient service ... AHRI is an independent international research institute with a board consisting of three Ethiopian biomedical scientists and three international scientists within the mycobacterial field.. The research scope of the Institute has been widened to mycobacterial research in general including tuberculosis rather than leprosy in particular, which was the case until 1996. Other infectious diseases pertinent to the region are not excluded from the agenda."
