The Japanese collections of the Oriental and India Office Collections at the British Library. The total holdings of printed books now amount to some 67,000 items with approximately 6,000 serials and 20 newspaper titles. In addition there are around 300 manuscripts. Noteworthy are materials gathered by Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716), a German physician and traveller who had stayed in Japan from 1690-92, and those amassed by Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866) during his sojourns in Japan from 1823 to 1829 and again from 1859 to 1862, among others.

The Gordon W. Prange Collection is a comprehensive collection of publications issued in Japan during the immediate post-World War II years, 1945-1949. The contents were once the files of the Civil Censorship Detachment (CCD), a unit of the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers' (SCAP) Press, The Collection includes 17,000 newspaper titles, 75,000 books and pamphlets, 10,000 news agency photos, 13,000 magazine titles, 90 posters, and 640 maps. The Japan Documentation Center was established in 1992 to collect and disseminate Japanese public policy information. The project successfully developed an information management system and
a database of over 5,000 items that includes source materials in fields such as economics, commerce and industry, law, politics, the environment, and social conditions. With the closing of the Japan Documentation Center (JDC) on March 31, 2000, the JDC database will not be updated, but the collection will be serviced by the Japanese Section staff in the Asian Division.

The Kano Collection consists of about 108,000 items of classical books, scrolls, documents, and art objects on all subjects of the Edo period from the collection of Kokichi Kano (1865-1942), a famous Meiji era philosopher and educator. The database includes 13,700 images from about 730 illustrated items (color prints, maps, etc.) among the microfilmed version of classical Japanese books and documents in the Kano Collection.

It is a Union Catalog of books and serials that covers participating university libraries throughout Japan. NCC is the main council for Japanese librarians in North America. It coordinates, develops, and locates funding for projects related to Japanese collections and their librarians. Established in 1948, the National Diet Library of Japan (NDL) is the only national library in Japan. It offers on-site services in three facilities: Tokyo Main Library, Kansai-kan (opened in October 2002), and the International Library of Children's Literature (opened in May 2002). Like the Library of Congress, NDL assists Diet members with their duties. It also provides library services for the Executive and Judicial branches of the government, and the general public. It is the only depository library in Japan, acquiring all materials published in Japan. The website includes the online version of the Japanese National Bibliography Weekly List (in Japanese) and online bibliographic information of forthcoming Books on Japan (in Western Languages). The Toyo Bunko (est. 1917) is the oldest and largest research library devoted to Asian Studies in Japan. Located in Tokyo, the library has 880,000 volumes (365,000 titles) of books and other sources relevant to Asian Studies. Its two main collections are: 1. Iwasaki Collection - Chinese books and rare Japanese books, as well as, ukiyo-e, scrollpaintings, and books that trace the history of printing from ancient times to the end of the 19th century 2. Morrison Collection - 24,000 volumes of works on Asia in twelve European languages.
