The Database of Houses
The Database of Houses is a continuing effort to list every country house built in Britain and Ireland, standing or demolished. The Database is updated daily and currently lists over 6,900 houses, with images for over 1,100 houses. Part of the DiCamillo Companion to British and Irish Country Houses website.
English Heritage
English Heritage, officially known as the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England, is the Government’s statutory adviser on the historic environment. It is an Executive Non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
Historic Scotland
Historic Scotland is an agency within the Scottish Executive Education Department and is directly responsible to Scottish Ministers for safeguarding the nation’s built heritage. On this site you can find information on more than 300 properties cared for by Historic Scotland, Scotland’s listed buildings and scheduled ancient monuments.
The National Trust
Website for a registered charity, independent of the government, whose mission is acquisition and protection of threatened coastline, countryside and buildings. The site provides information on holidays and travel to its historic properties in the United Kingdom, and links to many other sites such as those on conservation, in the United Kingdom.
The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland
The Commission, an executive non-departmental government body financed by the Scottish Parliament, is responsible for recording, interpreting and collecting information about the built environment. This information, which relates to buildings, sites, and ancient monuments of archaeological, architectural and historical interest (including maritime sites and underwater constructions) is then made freely available to the public. The site provides links to related websites.
The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales (RCAHMW)
The Royal Commission on the Ancient & Historical Monuments of Wales, established in 1908 to make an inventory of the ancient and historical monuments of Wales; carries out surveys, maintains an archive, library and national database (NMRW); supplies archaeological information to the Ordnance Survey for mapping purposes; and publishes information about ancient, historical and maritime sites, structures and landscapes.
