The papers of Whitman Bassow, journalist and foundation official, were donated to the Library of Congress by Bassow in 1990 and 1992.

The papers of Whitman Bassow were arranged and described in 1996. The finding aid was revised in 2007.

Sound recordings have been transferred to the Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division where they are identified as part of the Whitman Bassow Papers.

Scope and Content Note

The papers of Whitman Bassow (circa 1921- ), a journalist who reported from Moscow as a United Press International correspondent and as Newsweek's first bureau chief in the Soviet capital, span the years 1920-1990. They consist of material collected for his book The Moscow Correspondents: Reporting on Russia from the Revolution to Glasnost (1988). The bulk of the collection comprises transcripts of interviews Bassow conducted with correspondents who related their experiences working in the Soviet Union for various news organizations. These interview files, arranged alphabetically by name, also contain Bassow's notes, clippings, and occasional correspondence with interview subjects. There is also a file of photographs compiled for this book.
