Scope and Content Note

The papers of Richard Rogers Bowker (1848-1933) span the years 1831-1931. The papers chiefly relate to Bowker's activity as an early organizer of the Independent Republican movement in 1879, but also include literary works of European and American authors such as Thomas Bailey Aldrich, Austin Dobson, and Thomas Hardy. Also included is correspondence of Alexander Graham Bell, Henry Clay, Grover Cleveland, Edgar Fawcett, and Manton Marble. The collection also contains international copyright law material, autographs, printed matter such as "Star of Delta Alpha" lyrics and sheet music, and other printed matter. Bound volumes of letters and writings are arranged alphabetically by name of author.

A file on international copyright contains surveys of authors' views on the law as well as signed petitions urging Congress to enact legislation. Miscellaneous clippings, correspondence, Independent Republican campaign matter, pamphlets, photographs and drawings, a passport and birth certificate, and other printed matter are also included among Bowker's papers.
