Introduction

The Irving Fine Collection consists of materials given to the Library of Congress from 1964 through 1991 by Verna Fine (Mrs. Irving Fine).  In addition, the collection includes the manuscripts of Fine's "Romanza for Wind Quintet," a 1962 Library of Congress Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Commission and the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation commission of his "String Quartet" (1952).

Certain restrictions to the use or copying of the materials in this collection may apply.

Scope and Content

The bulk of the materials in the collection are musical scores and sketches which represent virtually the entire musical output of the composer.  Among these materials are manuscripts for "Alice in Wonderland" (1942); "The Hour Glass" (1949), a cycle for unaccompanied chorus to texts by Ben Johnson; "Mutability," a song cycle for contralto and piano originally commissioned by the Creative Concerts Guild, Inc., in 1952; and "Serious Song" (1955), for string orchestra; and "Symphony (1962)," which was performed by the Boston Symphony shortly before Fine's death in 1962.

In addition to the collection's music manuscripts there is an assortment of photographs, clippings, programs, scrapbooks and correspondence from 20th century musicians such as Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Lukas Foss, Alberto Ginastera, Ned Rorem, William Schumann and others which further documents Irving Fine's career.

Forty unpublished tapes presented to the Library by Verna Fine in 1969 feature recordings of concert, broadcast, and private performance of the composer's works.  Fine himself is the piano accompanist for a number of songs, including the cycles "Mutability" and "Childhood Fables for Grownups."  These materials are in the custody of the Motion Picture, Broadcast and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress.  An inventory is included on file.

This finding aid serves as a cross index to the materials that are housed in the collection as well as those which had been previously cataloged as ML96.F47,  ML 96.5.F47,  ML30.3C.F55 [Case] and  ML29C.F527.
