Summary: American soldiers climbing up a rock behind a French soldier. Perched on top of the rock are the imperial eagle and the Iron Cross. America entered the war April 6, 1917, with approximately 50,000 men. By the time the war ended in 1918, about 114,000 U. S. soldiers had been killed.
