Western Survey Photographs: A Checklist of the Stereographs from the Clarence King and George M. Wheeler Explorations, 1867-1874

Checklist 1

Stereographs from Clarence King's Explorations of the Fortieth Parallel, published by the U. S. Engineer Department

Extant King Survey stereographs published on official survey mounts range in number from 1 through 233, with several gaps in the series. All of the stereographs are by Timothy H. O'Sullivan except the views of the Uinta Mountains made in 1869 by Andrew J. Russell. The titles are transcribed exactly as printed on the mounts. The stereographs are albumen silver prints on four-by-seven-inch mounts. The sequence begins with views of the Union Pacific Railroad and follows with views of Wyoming, Colorado, Nevada, Idaho, and Utah. One view of California is interspersed with the views of Nevada. All of the stereographs are from the collections of the Bibliothèque national de France, Societe de geographie, unless noted.
