Introduction

The bungalow was one of the most popular styles of housing in the twentieth century before World War II. Typically the features of a bungalow consist of:

  • a low profile of one or one-and-a-half stories
  • a low-pitched roof which has widely overhanging gables or eaves with decorative braces
  • the gables often form a porch with square columns or heavy battered piers, so the porch is included under the same low, overhanging roof as the main house
  • the presence of built-in cabinets, shelves, and seating
  • the emphasis on the natural quality of materials such as wood

Its practical layout--with living space all on one floor around one central room--and its affordability, combined with artistic touches, appealed to a wide audience. As the style gained in popularity, designs proliferated across the country through pattern books and mail order catalogs by companies such as Sears, Roebuck & Co. and Montgomery Ward.

This list includes structures identified as bungalows by searching the online Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record/Historic American Landscapes Survey (HABS/HAER/HALS) records and by consulting reference files in the P&P Reading Room and books in the Library of Congress collections. It includes those sites for which the HABS documentation has been digitized--the majority of the bungalows documented by HABS. As additional documentation is digitized from the HABS/HAER Collection, entries will be added.

Select the small images below to view a larger version. Select the Call Number of the structure to retrieve, via the Prints and Photographs Online Catalog (PPOC), a bibliographic record for the entire group of documentation. The bibliographic record will provide fuller information about the house in question (such as owners' names) and generally includes additional images.

Images can be downloaded from this site. The Library of Congress cannot give or deny permission to publish or otherwise distribute material in its collections, but a rights statement for the Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record is available. Photographic and other types of copies can also be ordered from the Library of Congress Duplication Services by selecting the "Obtaining Copies" link in the bibliographic record and following the instructions given there.
