Prints & Photographs Online Catalog (PPOC)

The Prints & Photographs Online Catalog (PPOC) contains thousands of prints and photographs documenting the history of Maryland.

Search PPOC using the subject heading United States--Maryland to find digital images related to Maryland, such as prints, photographs, and political cartoons. Search on terms such as Maryland, Baltimore, Annapolis, and so forth to locate additional prints and photographs within PPOC. Selected images of Maryland are also provided for each collection listed below.

Pictorial Americana: Selected Images from the Collections of the Library of Congress

The image lists includes prints and photographs relating to historical events to 1899; general subjects such as education, daily life, miners and mining; and views of U.S. locations (text and images). Images of Maryland are included in the guide.


Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information Black-and-White Negatives

The images in the Farm Security Administration-Office of War Information Collection are among the most famous documentary photographs ever produced. Created by a group of U.S. government photographers, the images show Americans in every part of the nation. The collection contains more than a thousand black-and-white photographs taken in Maryland.


There are approximately 700 daguerreotypes in the Prints & Photographs Division. The majority of the images are portraits, but the collection does include a few early architectural views, outdoor scenes, and copies of works of art.

Gottscho-Schleisner Collection

The Gottscho-Schleisner Collection is comprised of over 29,000 images primarily of architectural subjects, including interiors and exteriors of homes, stores, offices, factories, historic buildings, and other structures. The collection contains more than four-hundred photographs from Maryland.

Baseball Cards

This collection consists of 2,100 early baseball cards dating from 1887 to 1914, including twenty-one cards from Baltimore teams.

Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record/Historic American Landscapes Survey

The collections document achievements in architecture, engineering, and design in the United States and its territories through a comprehensive range of building types and engineering technologies. Browse the collection by geographic location to locate items for Maryland.

Civil War

The Prints & Photographs Division holds thousands of images relating to the Civil War, found in many different collections. This category allows research across those collections. The collection contains over seventy images from the Battle of Antietam.

Panoramic Photographs

The Panoramic Photograph Collection contains approximately four thousand images featuring American cityscapes, landscapes, and group portraits, including thirty-nine photographs from Maryland.

Detroit Publishing Company

This collection of photographs from the Detroit Publishing Company Collection includes more than 25,000 glass negatives and transparencies as well as about 300 color photolithograph prints, including more than two hundred photographs taken in Maryland.

Horydczak Collection

The Theodor Horydczak Collection (about 14,350 photographs online) documents the architecture and social life of the Washington metropolitan area in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, including more than nine hundred photographs taken in Maryland.

Women of Protest: Photographs from the Records of the National Woman's Party

The collection documents the National Woman's Party's push for ratification of the 19th Amendment as well as its later campaign for passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. This online presentation is a selection of 448 photographs from the approximately 2,650 photographs in the Records of the National Woman's Party collection, including eight images related to the suffrage movement in Maryland.
