Astley, a riding master at Westminster Bridge, was also a conjurer. Today he is regarded as the father of the modern circus. He had a genius for trick riding, and noticing that these riders received more attention from the crowds. He opened a riding school where he could also conduct shows of acrobatic riding skill. From this emerged Astley's Amphitheatre, where he featured equestrians, musicans, clowns, jugglers, tumblers, tightrope walkers and dancing dogs. Conjuring, card tricks and circus feats filled the bill. Natural Magic revealed many of the tricks performed.

Copernicus abandoned the Ptolemaic system of the universe after recognizing that there were numerous problems and miscalculations associated with the application of its basic premise. He substituted the sun for the earth in his model and with this transition “the whole system of the heavens became clear, simple and harmonious.”  The book is divided into six chapter, and his text examines the rising and setting of the planets, the course of the sun as it relates to the constellations, a discussion of the four seasons of the year, the star catalogue, the mathematics of astronomy, measurement of the distances between planets and the particular motion of the earth, moon and planets.

The woodcut illustration that appears in his landmark work shows the sun at the center of the universe and the seven planets revolving around it.  Although Copernicus’s book was published in 1543 it took decades for it to have an impact but by the beginning of the seventeenth century his work was accepted by Brahe, Kepler, Galileo and became the target of reactionary forces within the Catholic Church who placed it on the Index in 1616.

Numerous editions of books entitled with some variation on Hocus Pocus, or, the Whole Art of Legerdemain emerged in the 18th century. They owe the bulk of their content to Reginald Scot's Discoverie of Witchcraft (1584), the influencial book that exposed witchcraft as merely the stuff of magic and conjuring.

Galileo’s second important work. In it, Galileo borrows from a Dutch discovery of using lenses to magnify objects and creates the first powerful telescope that he trained on the moon and the stars and then published his findings. The results of his observations were monumental. First, they demonstrated the importance of the new scientific instrument, the telescope. Second, his observations of the moon revealed the spherical dimensions of the planet and its density not unlike the physical structure of the earth. Classical astronomy described the moon as a crystalline sphere, without a core of matter. Third, for the first time the Milky Way, visible to the naked eye, was described in detail and he included the discovery of numerous stars that were hidden in the dense mist of the constellation.  Fourth, with the use of his telescope, Galileo identified four new planets circling Jupiter, and he named them the Medicean stars, after his patrons, the Medici family of Florence.

The direct relationship between magic and mathematics was understood very early on. The magician, whose work requires that his left hand know precisely what his right hand is doing, saw in mathematics a good source for his repertoire. Whether the discussion focused on probabilities, geometry, precise measurement, optics or even slight of hand, there was a mathematical components to the magic. Such discussion came to be know as "recreational mathematics," and its most famous proponents were Jean Leurechon and Jacques Ozanam.

Scot argued that witches did not exist and that their miraculous feats were nothing more than magic and conjuring. Today, Scot's text is seen as the first textbook about conjuring. Scot believed that the prosecution of those accused of witchcraft was irrational and un-Christian and he held the Roman Church responsible. Because of this stance, all obtainable copies of Scot's book were burned on the accession of James I in 1603 and those remaining are now rare. Scot's chapter on magic tricks constituted a substantial portion of the text found in every English-language magic book of the 17th and 18th centuries.
