It has been assumed that this volume comes from the library of Commendatore Ugo Ojetti of Florence, Italy. Of the nine copies known, this copy with 50 plates is the only complete copy known. The book was purchased from H. P. Kraus in 1957. Kraus purchased the volume from Carlo Chiesa, the noted bibliophile and bookseller from Milan, Italy. It is quite possible that the Ojetti copy passed through the hands of Chiesa before being sent to Kraus and then on to Rosenwald.

The Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems was Galileo’s attempt to promote the heliocentric theory of the universe. In the Copernican system the Earth and other planets revolved around the sun, while in the Ptolemaic system everything in the universe circles around the Earth. The Dialogue, published in Florence under a formal license from the Inquisition, attempted to skirt the controversy by couching the discussion in a fictional dialogue between Aristotle, Copernicus, and Ptolemy. The ruse was unsuccessful, and in 1633 Galileo was convicted of “grave suspicion of heresy.” Galileo was imprisoned, and in the Dialogo was placed on the Index of Forbidden Books, from which it was not removed until 1835.

Teyler set up a print shop in Rotterdam in 1688 after developing a method for making color impressions from a single plate. This folio volume contains 51 examples of Teyler’s work and demonstrates the quality of this color reproductive process. He was the first colour printer from copper plates and and colored on the plate itself, printing from one impression. Less than four hundred of his prints have survived. Before Teyler, all attempts at color printing were executed on a platen press, where the design was cut in relief into woodblocks or metal, ink was applied to the surface of the block and transferred to paper when the platen was brought down with about one pound of pressure per square inch.  For every color, another pass through the press was required, making it a very expensive, time consuming and exacting work.
