MODS 3.7 to MARC 21 Mapping

JUNE 2020

This mapping is for use with MODS Schema version 3.7 located online at: http://www.loc.gov/standards/mods/v3/mods-3-7.xsd

This mapping provides equivalencies between data elements in MODS and those in MARC 21.  Associated XSLT stylesheets, MODS 3.7 to MARCXML (XSLT 1.0) and MODS 3.7 to MARCXML (XSLT 2.0), employ this mapping to convert a MODS record to MARCXML (further conversion work is required to create a MARC 21 (ISO 2709) record).

MODS data is generally not as granular as MARC data therefore the conversion may result in some loss in data identification. This mapping specifies a single MARC 21 equivalent for each MODS element.

The first Excel spreadsheet below contains the mapping of all of the MODS elements.  The additional two auxiliary spreadsheets contain information for creating the MARC Leader and the MARC 008 field.
