Description: Archivematica is a free and open-source digital preservation system that is designed to maintain standards-based, long-term access to collections of digital objects. It uses micro-services to provide an integrated suite of software tools that allows users to process digital objects from ingest to access in compliance with the ISO-OAIS functional model. Users monitor and control the micro-services via a web-based dashboard. Archivematica uses METS, PREMIS, Dublin Core and other best practice metadata standards and implements format policies based on an analysis of the significant characteristics of file formats. AIPs can contain both originals and preservation copies and bagged using the Library of Congress Bagit specification.
Start Date: 2009-01-01

Implementation Details:
What repository workflows or functions does your PREMIS Metadata support? Ingestion, fixity check, message digest calculation, identifier assignment, quarantine, unquarantine, unpacking, name cleanup, virus check, format identification, validation, normalization, creation (i.e. creation of normalized versions of ingested objects), registration (assigning an accession number to a set of objects).
What PREMIS data module entities are represented in your implementation? Object, Agent, Event, Rights
How is preservation metadata stored in your repository? XML
What ancillary resources and tools do you use to support your PREMIS implementation? LOC eventType authorities, including nominated but not yet approved terms at Tools: Primarily File Information Toolset (FITS) and Open Planets Foundation's FIDO See a list of all tools in Archivematica here: Extension Schemas: FITS: Registries: PRONOM
Is your preservation metadata created internally, imported from external sources, or both? Created internally; extracted from ingested objects by FITS, FIDO and file extension; users can add other tools for migration using the Format Policy Registry in the preservation planning tab of the dashboard; rights template in web-based dashboard.
Is your preservation metadata used only internally or is it shared with external organizations? We don't create the metadata, we provide a tool (Archivematica) that creates the metadata; institutions may choose to share their metadata with external organizations.
