Sauerkraut Casserole

Europe, West: German

My family serves this meal often. It's true to our culture. It is most special as a New Year's tradition. I always remember my family sitting around the table sharing a big pot of it.

1 small head of cabbage, chopped
1 small onion
1 lb of uncooked hamburger
1/3 cup of uncooked rice
2 cans of stewed tomatos
1 small can of sauerkraut
salt and pepper

Brown hamburger. Add rice. Layer or mix cabbage and beef. Add salt and pepper. Top with tomatos and sauerkraut. Bake for 1 hour at 350.
