  June 2, 1924

President Calvin Coolidge signed a bill granting Native Americans full U.S. citizenship. For centuries, the United States officially recognized Indian tribes as "independent nations" within the United States. This legislation finally provided Native Americans with the right to vote and to be fully vested in the federal government.
