Symposium on "La Francophonie and the experience of living within the global French-language community"

Event Date: December 5, 2003

On December 5, 2003, the Hispanic Division presented a symposium devoted to both the context of La Francophonie and the experience of living within the global French-language community. In recognition of the bicentennial of its independence, special attention was devoted to Haiti. The languages of the symposium were English and French.

Conference on "Islam, Science, and Cultural Values"

On Thursday October 9, 2003, the African and Middle Eastern and the Kluge Center co-sponsored a conference on "Islam, Science and Cultural Values" with the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University, the Dialogue on Science, Ethics and Religion Program of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Office of International Affairs of the National Academy of Sciences.

In 1956, Dr. William Larimer Mellon and Mrs. Gwen Grant Mellon opened Hospital Albert Schweitzer in the Artibonite Valley of Haiti. In May 2002, The Hispanic Division held a symposium that focused on the history of the Hospital since its inception.

Writers included Iranian poet and movie director Goli Taraghi, Emma Sepulveda of the University of Nevada, Leila Ahmed of the Harvard Divinity School, and Abena Busia of Rutgers University.

    Poetry in America:
A Library of Congress Bicentennial Celebration


Event Date: April 3, 2000, 7:30 p.m. EST

Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky, Rita Dove, Louise Gluck, W.S. Merwin, Joshua Weiner and Naomi Shihab Nye will give a reading of their "Favorite Poems." Mr. Pinsky will also present the first video and audio recordings from the Favorite Poem Project, a project supported by the National Endowment for the Arts that has documented thousands of people from all walks of life reading their favorite poems. Selections from the project will be played. This evening event is sponsored by the Library of Congress, the Academy of American Poets, and the Poetry Society of America, with additional support from Borders Books.
