Flag of China   Why China Needs Democracy: Chinese Reform in Theory and Practice

This symposium, which considered whether China needs democracy instead of the conventional "how will China be democratized?", was organized and moderated by Lanxin Xiang, holder of the Henry Alfred Kissinger Chair in Foreign Policy and International Relations at the Library of Congress, and professor of international history and politics at the Institut Universitaire de Hautes Etudes Internationales in Geneva, Switzerland.

Edward Burtynsky In the Wake of Progress: Images of the Industrial Landscape

On Thursday, June 12, 2003, at the Library of Congress Mumford Room, the celebrated Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky will reviewed his twenty year career. His large-scale photographs of sites in the United States, Canada, Italy, Bangladesh, India and China are challenging. While they depict the degradation of nature due to quarrying, mining, railcutting, recycling, oil refining and ship breaking, they convey a sense of awe and beauty thus provoking a new awareness of the landscape of our time.

Event Date: June 5, 2002

Fresh from their Grammy win, the Blind Boys of Alabama present a free, lunchtime gospel concert on the steps of the Library of Congress. The concert was co-sponsored by the American Folklife Center and the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage as part of "Homegrown 2002: The Music of America," and the Library's Music Division, as part of its major musical initiative, "I Hear America Singing."

The Blind Boys of Alabama formed as a group at the Talladega Institute for the Deaf and Blind -- thirty miles from Birmingham, Ala. -- in 1937, where the members were taught piano in Braille. They sang together whenever they could; sneaking out of the school grounds to entertain nearby soldier encampments based there during World War II.

Event Date: April 3, 2000 and April 4, 2000

The celebration began on Monday, April 3 with readings of "favorite poems" by Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky, Rita Dove, Louise Gluck, and W.S. Merwin, along with Joshua Weiner and Naomi Shihab Nye. The reading celebrates the completion of The Favorite Poem Project, a video and audio archive of more than 1,000 Americans of all ages and from all backgrounds reading aloud their favorite poems. The project was supported with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

With this lecture on "Poetry and American Memory," Mr. Pinsky officially opened the Library's 1998-1999 poetry and literature series. The lecture was cybercast by broadcast.com in collaboration with the Library in the first of a new series of cybercasts from the Library of Congress. The Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry is appointed each year by the Librarian of Congress.
