Speaker Biography: Henry Gates Jr. is the W.E.B. Du Bois professor of the humanities, chair of Afro-American Studies and director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for Afro-American Research at Harvard University. Among his publications are several works of literary criticism including "The Signifying Monkey: A Theory of Afro-American Literary Criticism," winner of the 1989 American Book Award. He is editor of two anthologies, co-editor of the encyclopedia Encarta Africana and author of "Wonders of the African World," the book companion to the BBC/PBS television series of the same name. His most recent book, which he edited, is "The Bondswoman's Narrative by Hannah Craft." Gates received the 1998 National Humanities Medal.
