EVENT DATE: 10/09/2004
RUNNING TIME: 35 minutes
DESCRIPTION:
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar speaks at the 2004 National Book Festival.
Speaker Biography: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, six-time National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player, performed research in the early 1960s at Harlem's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. He was drawn back to researching in library archives for his most recent book, "Brothers in Arms: The Epic Story of the 761st Tank Battalion, WWII's Forgotten Heroes." Inspired by recollections of a family friend and veteran of the battalion and working with cowriter Anthony Walton, Abdul-Jabbar interviewed surviving members to develop this recounting of the wartime experiences of courageous men.
