Speaker Biography: In 1944, Robert L. Carter became an assistant to NAACP lawyer Thurgood Marshall and remained a lawyer with that organization for 24 years. During that time, he argued 22 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, 21 of which he won, including the historic Brown v. Board of Education (1954) that ended school segregation. His memoir, "A Matter of Law: A Memoir of Struggle in the Cause of Equal Rights" (The New Press, 2005), is the story of his struggle for equal rights for all Americans and recounts his history with the NAACP during the 1940s through 1960s. He holds numerous honorary degrees and awards, including the Springarn Medal--the NAACP's highest honor. Judge Carter currently serves in New York's Southern District.
