Idris Hadi Salih, minister of higher education of the Kurdistan region of Iraq, presents a lecture on education in Iraqi Kurdisan in a program sponsored by the African and Middle Eastern Division.
Speaker Biography: Idris Hadi Salih was born in 1952 in Ebril, in the Kudristan region of Iraq. He earned his bachelor of science degree in physics from the University of Sulaimaniya in 1976, his master's degree in communication engineering from Leningrad Institute of Communication (called Bonch Braivich) in 1982, and his PhD in Communication Engineering in 1985. He was a senior lecturer in the department of electrical engineering at the University of Suleimanya in 1979. In 1990, he became the chair of the department of electrical engineering at the University of Salahaddin. Salih has held a number of key cabinet positions in the Kurdistan Regional Government. He was a member of Parliament (1992 to 2005); the Minister of Transportation and Communication (1992 to 1996); Minister of Industry and Energy (1996 to 1998); and Minister of Municipalities and Tourism (1998 to 1999). Furthermore, he was the president of the University of Salahaddin (1999 to 2000), the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the central Iraqi government in Baghdad from 2004 to 2005, and the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs in the Iraqi government in Baghdad from 2005 and 2006. He is currently the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Kurdistan region, a position he has held since 2006. Salih is a member of the following professional affiliations: Iraqi Engineers Union, Kurdistan Engineers Union, Iraqi Teachers Union and the Kurdistan Physicists' Syndicate.
